THE GAITHERSBURG FINE ARTS ASSOCIATION was founded in 1976 as a small group of artists residing in Gaithersburg and has grown over the years to include members throughout Montgomery County. GFAA provides educational programs, promotional opportunities, multiple exhibits during the year, and outreach to local audiences.
Linda Slattery Sherman — Abstract Expressionism
“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.” Georgia O’Keeffe

"Sometimes the painting takes over and goes where it pleases."
Elisabeth Cummings

I still have the abstract expressionist logic: that you don’t fuss with a painting once the emotion is gone."
Grace Hartigan

People often have a hard time understanding abstract art.
"I don't get it", or "where is the skill in doing that?" or "What's the point?"
In my presentation for GFAA, I want to show the work of a few of my favorite abstract expressionists, talk about what I think they were trying to do and say, and point out how they utilized line, form, color, texture and composition, not unlike our favorite representational artists do.

Then the fun will begin when we all take a crack at making one or two communal abstract paintings, beginning with the the idea of just "making a mess" on the canvas. So wear your painting clothes please! As the presentation comes to a conclusion, I, or anyone else, will make an attempt to pull the painting together to finish it.
